WISDOM FROM THE MASTERS
Write N ow, Edit Later
That’s a tough one. I’ve hit goals and achievements over the years that I could nev- er have fathomed with my writing, for which I’m thankful, but one of the most rewarding moments has been publishing a children’s book series with my oldest son. Taking his imagination and story and creating a fun se- ries for kids has been so fun and special.
For aspiring authors I would say, don’t give up. Keep going. Keep writing. Get the first draft FINISHED. You cannot edit a blank page. It will not be perfect. And hey, no one expects it to be perfect, that’s what editing is for! Just get the words down and get your sto- ry out, everything else will start falling into place after that. Just get the words down and take it one step at a time.

Writing is a Marathon, N ot a S print
I’ve been self-publishing since 2013, which was right at the start of the big indie author boom. Timing certainly played a role in my journey, and the landscape has become far more competitive, making it even more cru- cial for aspeiring authors to approach this as a serious business, not just a hobby. If you want a lasting career in romance writing, you have to be all in—treating it like a full-time job with the dedication and consistency that any successful career demands.
One of the best things you can do is im- merse yourself in the author community. There are so many fantastic groups filled with invaluable advice, resources, and support. Learning from others and staying adaptable in an ever-changing industry is key.
But above all—write, write, write. You can’t build a career on just one book. Longev- ity comes from continually producing quality stories, growing your backlist, and treating this like a marathon, not a sprint. Success in this industry isn’t just about talent; it’s about persistence, discipline, and the willingness to keep showing up for your readers.

Crafting Bold Romance:
Risk, R esearch, and
R esonance
To write impactful romance, you must go beyond the surface. Annabel Joseph empha- sizes that successful storytelling requires a blend of deep research and sensory detail. Don’t just describe what is happening; en- gage all the senses—sights, sounds, and sen- sations—to create a multi-layered connec- tion that resonates with readers.
Authenticity is key, especially when ex- ploring complex power dynamics. Even if you aren’t writing from personal experience, you must understand the psychology of your characters and what makes them tick. Fur- thermore, don’t be afraid to take risks or push boundaries. While it is important to distinguish fantasy from reality through re- sponsible representation, your job is to lean into the “push and pull” that makes a story exciting. Finally, embrace your growth. You might cringe at your early, raw work, but that passion is what builds a lasting connec- tion with your audience. Stay bold, stay in- formed, and keep writing.
