Material as a Messenger
Agafonova’s work is characterized by a diverse array of materials, ranging from steel to mirrors and even neural networks. The decision behind each material stems from concept-first thinking. “The idea and theme always come first,” she explains. “Then I se- lect the material that best represents and em- bodies the vision. Functionality is important too, ensuring that the work remains durable and transportable.”
This meticulous process is evident in her installation Self-Sharpening. Inspired by modern society’s focus on mental health and personal growth, the project examines the balance between mental discipline and emotional sensitivity. While Agafonova acknowledges the importance of self-care, she critiques the growing emphasis on indi- vidualism and self-centric practices, aiming to provoke reflection in her audience. “I wanted to remind people about the impor- tance of balance between the mind and the heart,” she shares.
Envisioning Urbanization and Ecology
Themes of human interaction with nature permeate much of Agafonova’s work. Her installations, such as Polylog. Forms and Ef- forts Toward the Unattainable, grapple with modern urbanization’s effects on ecology and humanity’s transformation within incre- asingly technological societies. “Develop- ment and widespread adoption of technology
are topics that I constantly explore. These environmental concerns are important and visible in my work,” she states.
This exploration of contradictions is se- amlessly intertwined with optimism, evident in pieces like From the Point of View of the Sky. Featuring iron birds that symbolize the power of flight and freedom, the installation evokes hope amidst life’s trials. “These iron birds carry the idea of flight within themsel- ves,” Agafonova says, likening their uplif- ting presence to Tolkien’s legendary eagles, who come to aid during dire moments.
Dreams Come True: Personal Aspirations and Iconic Motifs
Agafonova’s Come True installation exemplifies art born from deeply personal experiences and aspirations. “In turbulent times, we all search for ways to inspire ourselves and continue forward,” she exp- lains. The project reflects her relationship with dreams and aspirations, celebrating the fulfillment of desires as a grounding force. “This project itself came out of a dream come true: my participation in an art resi- dency,” she adds.
Her recurring motif of “fallen stars” further ties into this theme, symbolizing the power of dreams and the hope each indivi- dual holds within themselves. Both universal and deeply personal, these elements rein- force Agafonova’s position as an artist who bridges the collective and the intimate.
