In exclusive interview with Mosaic Di- gest magazine, now shared with Read- er’s House readers, paper artist Clare Pentlow reveals the intricate world of her unique artistic expression, where mathe- matics meets creativity in the most delicate of mediums.
The Paper Whisperer
Paper artist Clare Pentlow transforms ordinary materials into intricate artworks, combining mathematical precision with natural inspiration. Her unique fluffy texture technique has earned collaborations with Hermès and Lexus.
During her Surface Pattern Design studies at University in Swansea, Wales, Clare discovered an unexpected love affair with paper that would define her artistic career. What started as a simple university project has blossomed into a distinctive artistic style characterized by her signature “fluffy-like” texture that continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
many layers can I add?” This scientific approach to artistic creation has resulted in groundbreaking techniques that challenge our perception of paper as a medium.
Despite working with prestigious brands and achieving international recognition, Cla- re remains committed to sharing her passion with others. “I hope people realize that paper can be more than just a surface to write on,” she reflects. “It’s about rediscovering the joy of creating something with your hands, away from screens and digital devices.”
As paper art experiences a renaissance similar to the recent resurgence of traditional crafts like crochet and knitting, Clare stands at the forefront of this movement, proving that sometimes the most ordinary materials can yield the most extraordinary results.

A Journey Through Texture and Light Transforms Ordinary Paper into Extraordinary Art
“Paper has always been my constant com- panion,” Clare shares with Mosaic Digest. “From folding train tickets in my pocket as a child to creating complex artistic pieces to- day, it’s been an evolving relationship.” Her work, which now graces private collections across Europe and America, demonstrates the extraordinary potential of this humble medium.
Clare’s impressive portfolio includes col- laborations with luxury brands like Hermès and Lexus, and her recent appointment as an associate at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists marks a significant milestone
in her career. Working from her studio at Holyhead Studios in Coventry, she continues to push the boundaries of paper art while maintaining a strong connection to commu- nity engagement through workshops.
The artist’s unique approach combines precision with organic forms, influenced
by her fascination with mathematics and natural patterns. “Looking at nature under a microscope, from pollen to diatoms in water, provides endless inspiration,” she explains. Her work particularly shines in its interac- tion with light and shadow, creating pieces that seem to dance with their environment.
What sets Clare’s work apart is her methodical experimentation with paper’s limitations. “I’m constantly asking questi- ons of the paper - how small can I cut, how
“Paper is something I’ve grown up with, it’s something I’ve continually played around with.”
“Delicate Cellular Forms” - Amesmerizing arrangement of white paper sculptures by Clare Pentlow showcases her signature spiky formations, each piece meticulously crafted to capture light and shadow while evoking microscopic natural structures.
