Transformation Through Wood-Based Sculpture: A New Direction in a Storied Career
Alex Diamond’s compelling shift from painting and photography to wood-based sculpture and carving marks a critical turning point in his career. When asked to explain this transition, he recalls a pivotal moment in his journey: “I worked a lot with wood back then, as a builder, for installa- tions and environments, and I used wood panels for my paintings. When I was asked to donate an artwork on a skateboard for a charity exhibition in 2008, I decided to carve into the board I was provided—it seemed very logical to me. And that changed my art practice completely overnight.”
This organic shift was not simply tech- nical, but profoundly conceptual. Wor-
king with wood evokes both patience and precision, qualities that profoundly influence Diamond’s approach to carving and const- ruction. While the physical demands require careful planning and meticulous execution, Diamond also embraces emotional spontane- ity. “The painting part is impulsive and dy- namic, while the carving is very meditative,” he notes. This juxtaposition of discipline and freedom lies at the heart of his work.
